We offer a small selection of decorative Bone Inlay furniture from India. Our inlaid cabinets, tables and mirrors are made near the city of Jodhpur, in Rajasthan India. They are decorated with intricate, graphic patterns by artisans using time honoured manufacturing techniques. The intricate patterns are created from shells or animal bones. The wide spread use of camels or buffaloes as a means of transportation or in agriculture, means animal bones are a readily available material in India. These bones are a natural and sustainable raw material.
Each piece of camel or buffalo bone is artfully shaped & polished manually according to traditonal artisanal methods. After that, the decoratively shaped small pieces are affixed to the surface of the piece of furniture. When the pattern is finished, the background is filled with resin. This creates the decorative graphic patterns on the surface of the furniture. Next, the cured resin is sanded and polished in several steps. This creates a wonderfully smooth and matte surface with a pleasant feel. Depending on the size, it can take 2-3 people up to 3 weeks to create a single piece of furniture.
These pieces of furniture are the result of a long-lasting artisanal tradition. They are both timeless works of art and statement pieces at the same time. Like a cherished and beloved family recipe, the art and skill of Bone Inlay is passed down from generation to generation. By purchasing one of our inlaid furniture pieces, you are supporting the preservation of this remarkable craft.
